A 9-year-old boy died after a bicycle accident in Ko Antrim, police confirmed.

The accident involving two motorcycles happened in the area of ​​Dunclug in Balimena on Thursday, June 16.

He died at the hospital as a result of his injuries after the incident, which occurred at around 16.55.

A second 13-year-old boy has been taken to hospital and is believed to be in critical condition this morning, June 17.

Police said the boys rode the two bikes.

A PSNI spokesman added: “A full investigation is under way and Detective Sergeant Neil Harrison is contacting anyone who has witnessed the collision or who has cell phone recordings that could help officers make inquiries with their inquiries. the Clash Investigation Division of 101, citing reference number 1342 of 16/06/22. ”

A spokesman for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) said earlier: “NIAS received a call on 999 at 16:47 following reports of two children being injured in a bicycle accident in the Dunclug area of ​​Ballymena this afternoon.

“NIAS sent three emergency teams and a doctor to the scene and also assigned the charity air ambulance with a HEMS crew on board.

“After assessment and initial treatment, one child was airlifted to the Royal Hospitals Group in Belfast, while the other was taken to the same place by ambulance.

SDLP Ballymena adviser Eugene Reed expressed his condolences.

He said: “I would like to express my sincere condolences to the family of the nine-year-old child who tragically died after a severe motorcycle accident yesterday in the Dunclug area. The news of this death will come as a huge shock to the local cohesive community. Losing a child, especially in these circumstances, is just awful, and my thoughts are with the child’s family as they struggle to cope with the worst news we can imagine as a parent.

“I would like to express my condolences to the other child involved in this incident and their family. I know that the whole community will join me and wish them a speedy recovery, and our thoughts are with them as they receive medical treatment.

“I would also like to thank those local people who cared for the injured immediately after the incident and who were undoubtedly traumatized by the accident, as well as the emergency services who provided first aid and ensured that the injured received the best possible medical treatment.

The mayor of Middle and East Antrim, Alderman Noel Williams, added: “I am deeply saddened by the news that a young boy has died since last night’s incident and I would like to express my condolences to his family.

“My thoughts and prayers are with both families and I ask that they be given the space they need at this very difficult time.

“I would like to thank the emergency services and in particular the Air Ambulance for the quick response to this incident and for providing the children with the necessary medical assistance.
