Arsenal are pushing for Ajax defender Lysandro Martinez to sign a £ 30m deal.

Initial talks have already taken place with Arsenal, who are ready to offer around £ 25 million for the Argentine international, but Ajax have rejected this figure and want more with the knowledge that other clubs are ready to bid.

The 24-year-old can play as a center back, left back and central midfielder.

According to reports from The Athletic, Arsenal believe that Martinez can offer competition to established left-back Gabriel Magalhaes, while providing cover for Kieran Tierney at left-back.

Arsenal’s problems at the end of the season came to the fore when Tierney was ruled out until the end of the campaign, with Mikel Arteta often having to resort to the use of unnatural players in the position.

If Martinez arrives, Nuno Tavares is likely to leave, ostensibly for rent, although reports suggest they will sell the Portuguese at the right price.

Martinez is the current Argentine international and helped his country win the opening final against Italy at Wembley this month.

He was a backup for Christian Romero and Nicolas Otamendi last year when Argentina won the Copa America.

Barcelona are fans, although they have other priorities, as they release more funding for transfers than the sale of marketing licenses and broadcasting rights.

Meanwhile, 23-year-old striker Eddie Nketia has signed a new contract until June 2027, as Sportsmail first revealed.

Arsenal continue to negotiate with Manchester City for a £ 50 million deal with Gabriel Jesus. The initial offer of around £ 35 million plus supplements was rejected.
