WASHINGTON – The U.S. Capitol Police said Friday that officers arrested seven unauthorized individuals at a congressional office building Thursday night and charged them with illegal entry.
People identified themselves as linked to CBS’s “Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” a spokesman for the Associated Press told the Associated Press.
Another person familiar with the matter provided the AP with a list of nine people stopped by Capitol police. They include several producers, along with Robert Smigel, the voice behind The Triumph of the Offensive Comic Dog.
The two, who spoke to the AP, could not publicly discuss details of the investigation and said on condition of anonymity.
The incident on Thursday night followed the third public hearing by the House Committee investigating the Capitol Uprising on January 6, 2021.
Capitol police said they received a disturbance call at the Longworth House office building at about 8:30 p.m. the agency. “The building was closed to visitors and these individuals were identified as part of a group that was directed by the USCP to leave the building earlier in the day.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS said the production team was in the Capitol on Wednesday and Thursday to record a comedy segment starring Triumph.
“Their interviews at the Capitol were allowed and pre-arranged by congressional members of the interviewed members,” the network said. “After leaving the members’ offices in their last interview of the day, the production team was left to film stand-up comedy and other latest comedy elements in the halls when they were detained by Capitol police.”
A statement from the USCP said the case remained “an active criminal investigation and could lead to additional criminal charges”. Capitol police, deviating from standard practice, refused to provide the names of those arrested.
