The third big golf season of 2022 arrived with controversies swirling behind the scenes. However, the USGA ensures that as little wind as possible has been removed from the sails of its premier event as US Open 2022 contenders begin battling The Country Club. This is the first time since 1988 that a national champion will be crowned in Brooklyn, Massachusetts, and some of the leading contenders are playing with great momentum.
Masters champion Scotty Scheffler made a devastating effort in the second nine on Friday to enter the dispute. Scheffler aspires to become the sixth golfer to win the Masters and US Open that season.
However, he was not the favorite at the beginning of the tournament. This honor went to Rory McIlroy, who came in hotter than anyone else in the field after defending his RBC Canadian Open title. McIlroy has three other places in the top 10 in his four previous starts and is one of only four golfers to finish in the top 10 in three (or more) of the last five US Opens.
McIlroy made the most of his momentum by opening the game at The Country Club with 67 and after a rough start on Friday with a double tap on par-4 third, he scored a bird on three of his last seven holes to finish with 69 and sit only one blow from the lead – the same position in which he entered the day. If Rory finishes this weekend, he will win his first major championship of 2014.
Collin Morikawa came out and scored the best Friday of any time with a 4-under 66 with impeccable effort over his last 14 holes of the day to take the 36-hole lead. Joining him, climbing the charts, was Jon Rahm, who scored an eagle on 14th to make a 3-under 67 and stood one shot behind Morikawa alongside McIlroy, Bo Hosler, Aaron Wise and Hayden Buckley.
Meanwhile, the man with the most titles of the week, Phil Mickelson, missed the part along with many other stars.
