Leclerc to start the Canadian Grand Prix from behind

The Monegasque driver, who is battling Max Verstappen for the Formula One world title, has already been set to drop 10 places as a result of new driving electronics on Saturday.

However, during the last free practice on Saturday morning, the FIA announced that Leclerc will take a number of new components of the power unit for the rest of the weekend in Montreal.

The new internal combustion engine, turbo, MGU-H, MGU-K is enough to mean that Leclerc will start from the rear of the grille together with Yuki Tsunoda from AlphaTauri, which also has a new engine installed.

Leclerc’s team-mate Carlos Sainz also took on a new internal combustion unit, his third and final of the season, so he is not subject to any penalties.

Ferrari’s decision to give Leclerc a new engine for Canada’s GP comes after a series of two failures in the last three races.

He withdrew from the leadership of both the Spanish Grand Prix and the Azerbaijani Grand Prix due to problems with the power unit.

In Spain, the problem meant that he lost the turbo and MGU-H, while the damage in Baku ensured that the power unit could not be repaired.

Leclerc is moving to his extra components at this stage of the year, coupled with earlier losses, meaning that after more than half the season until the end, he will probably have to take extra penalties before the end of the campaign.

While Leclerc is frustrated by the recent decline in form, he says the promising pace of the car, which was the fastest overall recently for one lap, gives him encouragement for the future.

“We are aware of the pace in the car. So we find confidence in that, “he told Motorsport.com.

“We know that reliability has obviously been an issue in the last three races, but the performance is there. So we know that every time we solve these problems, we will be right there and fight Red Bull for the championship.

“I am confident in this team because they are giving 200% as always, obviously, and I am sure that once we solve our problems, we will be able to get Red Bull back.”
