Liverpool have completed the signing of Scottish under-21 defender Calvin Ramsey of Aberdeen, subject to international approval. The 18-year-old joins the Premier League club with a “long-term contract” in a deal that is estimated to cost the original £ 4 million, with another £ 2.5 million as potential additions.
“It’s just buzzing and it’s really a dream come true to be here,” Ramsey said. “It was a dream come true to play for Aberdeen, and now to be in one of the biggest, if not the biggest club in the world, this is a great achievement and I look forward to trying to show the fans what I have. “
Ramsey has been named the Scottish Football Writers’ Association’s Young Player of the Year for the 2021-22 season, in addition to being on the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year list. The right-back advanced through the youth ranks of Aberdeen, making his adult debut in March 2021 and playing 39 times, scoring once.
He is Jurgen Klopp’s third addition to the summer since the arrival of Darwin Nunez from Benfica and the announcement that Fabio Carvalho will officially join the Fulham club on 1 July.
“Obviously there is a way here – that’s one of the reasons I chose it,” added Ramsey, who has been three times ahead of his country three years below. “This is not just a huge club, they give a chance to young players in the first team. So, if I can go into pre-season training, put my grade, then there’s no reason why I can’t insist on joining the first team. “
Ramsey’s departure is a record sale for the Scottish Premiership, surpassing the reported fee of £ 3 million they received in September 2020 when Scott McKenna moved to Nottingham Forest.
“Liverpool are very lucky, they are getting promising young talent,” said Aberdeen manager Jim Goodwin. “His statistics in the first half of last season were among the best for full-backs in the world. We certainly had high hopes for him and I have no doubt that he will strengthen himself in a very good team in Liverpool. “
