Three days before the NBA Draft and the Free Agency around the corner, trade talks, signatures and chases for all 30 teams began in earnest. There are big free agents – and potential free agents – throughout the league – Zack Lavigne of Chicago, Bradley Beale of Washington, James Harden of Philadelphia, Deandre Ayton of Phoenix, Miles Bridges of Charlotte, Jalen Brunson of Dallas, Anferney Porn and Simon. Anferni Simons of Philadelphia.
But one of the most anticipated situations of a free agency includes Kyrie Irving of Brooklyn, who has a June 29 deadline to choose a $ 36.9 million player for the 2022-2023 season. However, many sources told Athletic that talks about Irving’s future were stalled between him and the Nets. There is currently a dead end between the parties, clearing the way for the seven-time All-Star to consider an open market, the sources said.
Irving joined the Nets with Kevin Durant in the summer of 2019, although Durant missed their first season together as he recovered from a torn Achilles tendon. Irving joined the All-Star Team in 2020-21 and helped the franchise reach the Eastern Conference semifinals with Durant and James Harden before suffering an ankle injury in Game 4 against Bucks. After last season, in which he played only 29 games and missed most of the home games of the season due to his decision not to comply with New York’s vaccine mandate, Irving made it clear that he intends to return to the Nets in the summer and continue to build with Durant and newcomer Ben Simmons. He averaged 27.2 points, 6.1 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game and made 40.4% of his 3-point attempts in three seasons with Brooklyn, but played in 103 of 216 games in the regular season.
“Actually, I’m not planning on going anywhere,” Irving said on April 25 after the end of the Nets’ season against the Celtics in the first round of the East playoffs.
Nearly two months later, both sides seem to have serious work to do to find a solution to bring Irving back to Brooklyn and his Durant counterpart, who has a contract with the Nets until 2025-2026. Several teams from across the league are watching the situation, wondering about the future of Irving and Brooklyn.
The Lakers, Knicks and Clippers are expected to be among the interested suitors if Irving goes elsewhere, according to a number of sources in The Athletic.
For the Lakers, the likely way to acquire Irving – and reunite him with LeBron James – would be to choose Irving to facilitate trade, as the Lakers can’t realistically clear the restriction space to sign it themselves, and signing and trading would triggered the hard cap, making Irving’s acquisition much more difficult. If Irving joins in, Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka will have to comply with collective bargaining rules, which means that if Irving’s $ 36.6 million was the only incoming salary, the Lakers could send out $ 29.3 million. million to $ 45.8 million from Nets and / or a third party legal transaction team.
For the Knicks, the likely path to Irving’s acquisition depends on what the Nets prioritize. New York is even on the pay-as-you-go line for 2022-2023, so it can free up enough space to sign Irving on a maximum contract by unloading salaries like Evan Fournier, Alec Burks, Nerlens Noel and Kemba Walker. But the Knicks may also offer some or all of these Nets or third-team players with a possible subscription and exchange.
For the Clippers, the likely path to Irving requires him to get involved, as they go well beyond both the luxury tax line and the 2022-23 hard line. To meet the salary match, the Clippers will have to send between $ 29.3 million and $ 45.8 million to the Nets and / or a third team if Irving is the only salary targeted at them. The Clippers’ scenario is less complicated than the Lakers, as the Clippers have a series of players earning between $ 11 million and $ 17 million to work with. For example, the release of two or three Norman Powell, Marcus Morris, Luke Kennard and Reggie Jackson meets CBA trading rules and they also have a collection of young players like Terrance Mann or Brandon Boston who could help sweeten the deal.
Potentially leaving Irving would be incredibly detrimental to the Nets because of their limited ability to replace him and his salary if Irving signs elsewhere as a free agent. The more likely route to each departure would be through sign and trade. Brooklyn owes $ 111 million to six players in 2022-2023, not including Irving, so even filling the minimum wage list would put the Nets above the projected $ 122 million salary ceiling for next season. If Irving leaves, Brooklyn’s strongest path to adding talent will be the complete $ 10.3 million average exception. Irving is also eligible for a new deal by exercising his player option and extending his contract from there, which could provide him with a starting salary of $ 45.2 million for 2023-24.
“We’re looking for guys who want to be part of something bigger than themselves, play team basketball and be available,” GM Sean Marx said in May. “This is true not only for Kyrie, but for everyone here.”
For the Nets, the fate of Irving’s free agency is something to watch out for, as the draft and the NBA’s free agency are close.
More news and notes from the NBA
Atlanta Hawks
Hawks’ free agent guard Lou Williams intends to continue his career as a player, says his agent Wallace Prater. “(Williams) is not trying to retire and I will be active in talking to the teams during the free agency,” Prater said. Williams, a 17-year veteran, averaged 6.3 points and 14.3 minutes per game in 56 races last season.
Charlotte Hornets
Rival leaders expect restricted free agent Hornets Miles Bridges to order a maximum or near-maximum deal in July, and sources said Charlotte is hesitant to match the maximum list. Bridges had a breakthrough season in 2021-22, averaging 20.2 points, seven rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. In a league in which wings like Andrew Wiggins of Golden State and Jason Tatum of Boston and Jaylan Brown have changed the game to advance to the NBA Finals, Bridges’ two-way ability on the wing has been incredibly appreciated.
Cleveland Cavaliers
Cavaliers restricted free agent Colin Sexton has been granted full basketball leave, sources said. Sexton underwent surgery in November to repair a torn meniscus and fully recovered on the eve of joining a free agency. Rival executives believe the Sexton market could reach a range of $ 20 million a year.
Indiana Pacers
Pacers are seriously discussing deals focused on Malcolm Brogden and Miles Turner, sources said. Withers and Knicks are interested in Brogden, armed with 10 and 11 elections, respectively, sources said. The Hornets have shown interest in Turner, the sources said. However, Indiana, who is number 6 in the draft, may choose to continue re-equipping its veteran core instead of building entirely around young players.
Minnesota Timberwolves
The Timberwolves have discussed deals around veteran centers, including the Clint Capella in Atlanta, sources said.
Sacramento Kings
The Kings are becoming more comfortable with the No. 4 draft in Thursday’s draft and describe a high price for the teams behind them in the lottery, which are trying to exchange, sources said. Sacramento general manager Monte McNair has spoken out about Hawks striker John Collins – among many other established, productive players in the market – but has not been the No. 4 pick in Collins-focused discussions, and McNair will eventually decide on the choice, according to sources.
Utah Jazz
Sources said Jazz is planning a second interview with almost all of its 15 head coach candidates as the next step in the process.
The 15 candidates for head coach are: Knicks assistant Johnny Bryant; current assistant Alex Jenson; current assistant Lamar Skeeter; Raptors Assistant Adrian Griffin; Celtics assistant Will Hardy; Bucks Assistant Charles Lee; Heat Assistant Chris Quinn; Mavericks Assistant Sean Sweeney; Celtics assistant Joe Matsula; Piston Assistant Jerome Allen; 76ers Assistant Sam Kassel; Suns assistant Kevin Young; G League head coach Jason Terry; former Lakers coach Frank Vogel; and former Trail Blazers coach Terry Stots.
Draft notes
• Jabari Smith of Auburn, who trained and met Magic (№ 1) and Thunder (No. 2) during the preliminary process, is a virtual lock to get into the top two in the draft. He remains the favorite for number 1.
• Shadon Sharp of Kentucky is the mysterious man in the NBA Draft. Sharpe is projected to have a high lottery selection and sources say he has conducted strenuous group training such as three-on-three fights to demonstrate his ability to teams that have not seen him play organized basketball in the past year or two. Instead of training individually, Sharpe is looking for competition, working for teams between the 1-13 draw ranges.
• Michael Foster of G League Ignite will eventually train for 15 teams, with his 6-foot-9 build and expected flexibility at the next level, making him a sleeping candidate for the draft. In 13 games for Ignite last season, Foster averaged 14.8 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.
