Former Republican Gov. Eric Grietens, a Republican candidate for the Senate, has come under widespread criticism after launching an advertising campaign Monday showing he is pretending to persecute members of his own party.

“Today we are going hunting for RINO,” Greytens said in the video, using the acronym for the mocking phrase “Republicans by name only.”

In the ad, Greytens stands in front of the house with a team of others dressed in tactical gear and whispers, “RINO feeds on corruption and is marked by streaks of cowardice.”

The tactical team then smashed the door, detonated smoke bombs inside and stormed with weapons.

“Join the MAGA team. Get a RINO hunting license, “said Greytens, standing inside an apparently empty house surrounded by smoke.” There’s no baggage limit, no marking limit, and it doesn’t expire – until we save our country. “

The ad was published Monday morning in various social media accounts belonging to Greitens and his Senate campaign.

Greytens’ ex-wife accuses him of domestic violence in court documents

The video was removed from Facebook “for violating our policies to ban violence and incitement,” according to Facebook spokesman Andy Stone, but the video remained on Twitter and YouTube from early Monday afternoon.

About four hours after Greitens posted the video, Twitter posted a warning label on the tweet, saying it “violates Twitter’s abuse policy.” However, Twitter left the video with a message that the company “decided it might be in the public interest to keep the tweet available.” A YouTube representative did not return a request for comment.

The ad comes amid a wave of political violence and threats against government officials, as well as a general storm in conservative circles among those who believe in the baseless allegations of former President Donald Trump that the 2020 election was rigged. from the Republican Party, who spoke out against these allegations.

The Washington Post last year tracked how election administrators in at least 17 states received threats of violence in the months following the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, often sparked directly by Trump’s comments.

On Sunday, spokesman Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) Said his wife had received a letter in the mail threatening to execute his family, including their 5-month-old baby. Kinzinger is one of 10 Republicans who broke with his party last year and voted to impeach Trump, and has since been criticized by Trump and his allies as Rhino.

Kinzinger also drew outrage from Republican voters and members of his own party for being one of two Republican lawmakers serving on a House of Representatives election commission investigating the January 6 attack.

The rise of He-Man’s political ads

I will tell you that there is violence in the future, “Kinzinger told ABC’s” This Week “on Sunday, talking about the death threats he and others have received. “And until we start telling people the truth, we can’t expect anything else.”

The Greitens campaign also came after a series of mass shootings, including at a Buffalo grocery store on May 14, where 10 people were killed, and in Uwalde, Texas, where 19 children and two teachers at Rob Elementary School were killed. on May 24. These and other shootings sparked protests across the country against gun violence and sparked some bipartisan talks in Congress over gun safety legislation.

The ad was quickly criticized by those who warned that Greitens’ video could lead to real-world violence.

“It’s sociopathic,” tweeted Joaquin Castro (D-Tex.). “You’re going to kill someone.”

Democratic National Committee Chairman Jamie Harrison called the video “radical … extreme … motionless.” Former Congressman Joe Walsh, who left the Republican Party because of his criticism of Trump, said he was not surprised by the ad and called on GOP who still supports Trump.

“To any Republican today who thinks of criticizing this ad: You can’t criticize this and still support Trump,” Walsh tweeted. “There is a ZERO difference between Eric Grittens and Donald Trump. In fact, your cowardly hug of Trump led directly to Gracens and [Marjorie Taylor] Green and [Lauren] Beabert and… ”

Others cited Greytens’ own history of violence. Greytens, a former naval seal, has been accused by his ex-wife of domestic violence, including physical violence against their children. He denied the allegations.

Greytens resigned as governor of Missouri in 2018 in disgrace after an affair with a former hairdresser that included allegations of abuse and extortion. He launched his campaign for the Senate last year after Senator Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) Announced he would retire at the end of his term.

Representatives of the Republican Party, the National Republican Senate Commission and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) Did not respond to requests for comment.
