The latest Boris Johnson: The “neck and neck” partial election in the Tory fortress

Boris Johnson cannot deny that he offered Carrie Simonds a top position

The decisive by-elections in the Conservative stronghold of Tiverton and Honiton are “neck and neck”, according to the Liberal Democrats.

As voters prepare to go to the polls on Thursday in two by-elections, Sir Ed Davy suggested that his party “may be on the verge of a historic victory”.

The second ballot will take place in Wakefield, a red-wall location that Sir Keir Starmer hopes to take back for Labor after falling into the hands of the Tories in the 2019 elections for the first time since the constituency was created. in 1932

Conservative MPs told The Independent that the double defeat in the by-elections would be a “disaster” for the struggling Boris Johnson, who survived a vote of no confidence two weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Jacob Rees-Mogg has been accused of unraveling a “trick” on Brexit – a quarterly billboard with reformed EU laws – which “will do nothing to address the real challenges facing the public today”.

Six problems for Brexit six years after the EU referendum

Six years have passed since the 2016 EU referendum, and Brexit has taken place. But not everything is needed well.

A survey conducted by Savanta ComRes in October found that only 36% thought the project was a success and 52% said it was a failure, writes John Stone.

Here are six of the biggest enduring problems that Brexit has caused to mark six years since the big vote.

Voting begins in the by-elections

Voting has begun in Tiverton, Honiton and Wakefield for crucial midterm elections that could lead to the expulsion of conservatives from the cities.

Competition in Tiverton and Honiton is on the doorstep, according to Liberal Democrats, who are seeking a major political upheaval in Devon’s place.

Meanwhile, Sir Keir Starmer hopes to regain Wakefield for Labor after falling to the Tories in 2019 for the first time since 1932.

Brexit has left “lasting scars” on EU citizens living in the UK, according to research

Six years after the EU referendum, Brexit has left “lasting scars” on European citizens living in the UK, according to a new study.

Two-thirds of UK and EEA citizens living in the UK said the Brexit had “significantly – and most negatively – affected their feelings towards the UK”, said researchers from the University of Birmingham and the University of Lancaster.

And many of the 364 people interviewed said Brexit had prompted them to rethink their future in the UK and undermined their confidence in British institutions and politicians.

Labor MP signs sick after ‘long campaign of misogynistic abuses’

A Labor MP is taking time off from work after suffering from a “long campaign of hateful harassment and abuse”.

Poplar and Limehouse MP Apsana Begum posted a statement on Twitter Wednesday night saying she was in hospital on June 12 and was subsequently fired from her GP.

She said: “During my time as a Member of Parliament, I was subjected to a lengthy campaign of misogyny and harassment.

“As a survivor of domestic violence, it was particularly painful and difficult. This abusive campaign had a significant effect on my mental and physical health. “

Ms Begham, who was part of the 2019 reception, added that her staff and office would still be open to help people in her constituency in East London while she was ill.

Tory MP ousted faces new ‘paid advocacy’ investigation

David Warburton, who was fired by conservatives on charges of sexual harassment and cocaine use, faces a new Commons investigation.

Mr Warburton has been disciplined by his party and is already being investigated by Parliament’s Independent Complaints and Complaints Scheme (ICGS), of course.

The MP from Summerton and Fromm is now also under investigation by the Commissioner for Parliamentary Standards for violating the three-point code of conduct.

These are “paid advocacy”, non-declaration of interest and rules on the declaration of “gifts, benefits and hospitality”.

The next Labor leader should be a woman, Harman said

Harriet Harman said it was “outright embarrassing” that the Labor Party had never led a woman and that the next leader should be a woman.

“Because even when we have leadership elections in the distant future, next time she has to be a woman, because it’s embarrassing that the Conservatives had two and we don’t even have a woman leader in opposition, let alone a woman prime minister.” she told GB News.

Ms Harman added: “I think it’s partly because women in the Labor Party are more subversive than women in the Conservative Party. Women in the Conservative Party tend to work with men without challenging them the way we do.

Votes Boris Johnson was confused as Keira Starmer won the rhetorical battle

We took our seats on the opposition leader’s questions, waiting for Boris Johnson to ask Keira Starmer to condemn the rail strikes six times.

But as everyone expected the prime minister to do so, he was deprived of the element of surprise.

Instead, it was Starmer who began by praising the “brave” Conservative candidate in the Wakefield by-elections.

The Labor leader had no decision, but he was looking responsibly at the prime minister’s questions this week, writes John Rentol.

Tory MP calls striking railroad workers “Putin’s friends”

Conservative MP Tobias Eloud called the striking railway workers “friends” of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The only government in Europe that actually opposes [Vladimir] “Putin is completely distracted in this way,” Mr Elwood said.

“I tell the unions, please don’t be Putin’s friends. Get back to the talks today so we can move the country forward again. “

Bypoll at the Tverton and Honiton Tory Fortress “neck and neck”

The decisive by-elections in the Conservative stronghold of Tiverton and Honiton are neck and neck, according to the Liberal Democrats, who are seeking a major political upheaval in Devon.

As voters prepare to go to the polls on Thursday in two by-elections, Sir Ed Davy has suggested that his party “may be on the verge of a historic victory” in the south-west constituency, overturning a majority of 24,000 Tories.

The second ballot will take place in Wakefield, the site of the “red wall” that Sir Keir Starmer hopes to regain for Labor after falling into the hands of the Tories in the 2019 elections for the first time since the constituency in 1932

Conservative lawmakers told The Independent that Thursday’s double defeat in the by-elections would be a “disaster” for struggling Boris Johnson, who survived a no-confidence vote two weeks ago.

RMT accuses Grant Shaps of “destroying” the negotiations

Millions of rail passengers across the UK are facing new disruptions on Thursday after the RMT union accused the government of “disrupting” negotiations, my colleague Tom Bachelor said.

Rail services have been severely disrupted this week after some 40,000 union members working for Network Rail and 13 train operators voted in favor of another departure due to jobs, pay and conditions.

Talks took place between the union and industry leaders on Wednesday in a bid to overcome the stalemate, but ended without an agreement.

Mick Lynch, RMT’s secretary general, said: “Grant Shaps has failed these negotiations by not allowing Network Rail to withdraw its letter, which threatens to cut 2,900 of our members.

“Until the government releases the shackles of Network Rail and the companies operating the trains, it will not be possible to reach a negotiated agreement.

He added: “We will continue with our industrial campaign until we reach an agreed agreement that provides job security and an increase in our members’ pay, which is tackling the escalating cost of living crisis.
