Lib Lib sources said their party won the by-election with at least 1,000 votes. The official results are expected to be announced shortly before 4 am.
“If I had said six months ago that we would win this by-election, everyone would have laughed rightly,” said one astonished insider.
Lib Dem MP Christine Jardin, who is counting in Crediton, said her party would now move to the posts of prime minister and deputy prime minister in the next election.
She told the Telegraph: “This is huge. This is the largest majority canceled since the 1935 by-elections, and this should send a message to the government.
“If I were a Conservative MP at the moment, I am amazed that they have not yet acted, that they do not see the inscriptions on the wall.
“If they can lose seats they think are as safe as that, then both the prime minister and Dominic Raab, there are far fewer of them than you have here. They need to think about it. “
