Paul Pelosi, the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was charged with alcohol-related offenses in a car crash in Napa County, California, in May, the Napa County Attorney’s Office said Thursday.
Charges include driving under the influence of alcohol, causing injury, and driving with 0.08 percent blood alcohol or higher and causing injury, prosecutors said.
A blood sample taken by Mr Pelosi more than two hours after the crash had 0.082 percent blood alcohol content, the office said.
The service said the sentence on the charges included a minimum of five days in prison and up to five years probation. Pelosi, 82, is scheduled to stand trial in the Napa County Supreme Court on August 3rd.
“Under California law, these charges can be filed as a crime or a felony,” Alison Haley, a district attorney, said in a statement. “Based on the amount of injuries suffered by the victim, the district prosecutor has filed a charge of guilt. This decision is in line with the way our office handles these cases of such injuries. “
A spokesman for Mr Pelosi declined to comment on Thursday. A spokeswoman for Ms Pelosi said in May that she would not comment on the “private issue” that occurred while she was on the East Coast.
On May 28, Mr. Pelosi was driving a Porsche 2021 and tried to cross State Road 29 when his car was hit by another vehicle, a jeep, at 10:26 p.m., according to a report by a California road patrol.
Ms Haley’s statement did not clarify the nature of any injuries. The California Highway Patrol said there were none. Neither Ms. Haley nor the California Highway Patrol could be reached late Thursday.
Mr. Pelosi and Mrs. Pelosi own a vineyard in the Napa Valley. The couple met at Georgetown University and married in 1963.
