Wayne Rooney has decided to extend his time as head of Derby County, as attention is focused on his next move with clubs in the Premier League and Championship, which are likely to follow his situation.
Wayne Rooney had to deal with constant problems in Derby
Wayne Rooney’s troubled time as head of Derby County is over – what’s next?
The former Everton and Manchester United player began his managerial career in the troubled team of the Championship and constantly dealt with minimal resources and financial challenges. Since the club is already in League 1, Rooney decided to leave.
“Today I met with the administrators to inform them of my decision that it is time to leave the club. Honestly to them, they tried very hard to change my decision, but my decision was made, “he said in a lengthy statement. In his brief stint at Pride Park Rooney showed he has the ability to cut it in the dugout, but his next challenge he can open other doors – or see them close if he chooses the wrong option.

So far, he has survived only the second level of England, but his name and reputation will no doubt see opportunities emerge. Compatriots Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard have received calls to take on big jobs and Rooney may be next. Its availability may alert the bosses of several clubs – but where will the 36-year-old player end up? We are considering its possible options.
Everton
The tale. Rooney went through the ranks of the blue half of Merseyside, exploding on the stage in Goodison Park before continuing to achieve great things. Everton have just avoided dropping out last term with Lampard at the helm, but if they find themselves in a similar predicament this autumn, then they can still call Rooney.
Lampard is still battling the Everton doubters, but with Farhad Moshiri looking to sell and key players potentially leaving, the future, at least in the short term, could be bleak in Goodison. Hiring club legends is always a risky strategy, but Rooney will certainly command the locker room.

He, too, would no doubt have the affection of the fan base, which could give him more time than most. Rooney will want to determine the exact time if he wants to return to his club from childhood, so this may also be a factor.
Southampton
Another Premier League door could open at St Mary’s in the coming months. Ralph Hazenhuttle is about to start his fourth full season at Saints, but has faced calls to be sacked by some fans last term.
Southampton have not been directly involved in relegation battles during their tenure, but the results are incredibly inconsistent and the Austrian and the club may soon choose to take on new challenges. The Saints have long had an excellent youth system, and Rooney would no doubt benefit from it if given the opportunity.

The hierarchy at St Mary’s has also proven that it is ready to give coaches time. Not only that, they are willing to take risks – just as they did with a Mauricio Pochettino in 2013.
Norwich City
Another relegation seemed inevitable a long time ago and now the Canaries will strive to win a third promotion in five seasons. Dean Smith was appointed for the last term – a man with proven experience in earning second-level promotions.
With a team full of know-how in the Championship, Norwich will be expected to sit close to the top of the table from day one. Otherwise, the club could pull the trigger and open the door for Rooney. While in Derby, he spent all his time at the bottom of the table – he could be given a chance to see if he could handle the top, after dealing impressively with limited resources.
West Brom
Baggies is another club that is firmly focused on promotion. Last term, they failed to return immediately and will strive to prove that their team with many talents can return to the championship.

Steve Bruce is the man who runs them at Hawthorns, but the veteran boss is unlikely to take big steps before the end of the season. He has won just six of his 17 games and a slow start to the season could lead to a break in the West Brom bosses’ bonds, leaving Rooney open to prove he can do the job at the top of the division.
Bournemouth
Cherries could be another club to offer Rooney a chance to become a top flight manager. Bournemouth recently secured a return to the Premier League after two years out of the division, with Scott Parker leading them to promotion. Parker has twice fired Fulham and wants to prove he can support a club.
Bournemouth have a lot of quality in their ranks and will not return to the championship without doing everything possible. This could mean a change in the dugout if things don’t go according to plan, and with a few young English stars on their team, Rooney may be a popular choice.
