NBA Rumors: Trevion Williams of Purdue joins Celtics Summer League

The Boston Celtics have selected just one player in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft, but JD Davison will have company in Las Vegas this summer.

Purdue big man Trevion Williams will play for the Celtics in the NBA Summer League on July 9, ESPN’s Jonathan Givoni announced on Friday.

Purdion Williams of Purdue will play a summer league with the Boston Celtics, a source told ESPN. The senior 6’9 ranked as the best pass in this draft. He will bet on himself in the Vegas Summer League and will strive to secure a deal from the NBA with a strong performance.

The 6-foot 10 and 265-pound native of Chicago averaged 12.0 points, 7.4 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game last season, winning the Big Ten Sixth of the Year awards after stepping down from the Boilmakers bench as senior. Williams was the first All-Big Ten team as a teenager and was actually named for the 2021 NBA Draft before retiring and returning to Purdue for another season.

The name Udoka alludes to the Celtics’ plan, indicating a “key” need

Williams is considered one of the best players left undefeated on Thursday night, and his ability to pass should intrigue Celtics fans. Although it is rare for non-drafted players to make an impact at the NBA level, there is a recent precedent: Austin Reeves (Los Angeles Lakers) and Jose Alvarado (New Orleans Pelicans) both made rookie roles after remaining undefeated, and Fred Vaughn a team of stars, although he was not drafted.

The 21-year-old Williams will get the chance to prove himself for the Boston Summer League team, which will also include second-round pick JD Davison and international prospects Yam Madar and Johan Begarin.
