It is reported that Manchester United (opens in a new section) is “very close” to the completion of the signing of Frankie de Jong from Barcelona (opens in a new section).
The Dutch midfielder is strongly connected with the move to Old Trafford, where he will reunite with his compatriot Eric ten Haag – his boss at Ajax (opens in a new section).
And according to the Barcelona-based Sport outlet (via Football365) (opens in a new section), United are on the verge of a deal worth around £ 68 million for the 25-year-old.
United are crying out for extra quality in the midfield – and the wonderfully rounded De Jong should certainly provide that.
Legendary Red Devils defender Gary Palister believes De Jong would fit right into his former club. Speaking to Metro earlier this week, he said (opens in a new section):
“I hope they manage to make a deal; De Jong is the right age, has a lot of experience and is the type of player who can really express himself in a place like United.
“He’s used to the tension and the spotlight that was in Barcelona, so he’d definitely check the box …”
So De Jong may be on the verge of becoming United’s first summer addition – but perhaps he would have been on the other side of the division in Manchester if things had turned out differently three years ago.
