Google search for “how to move to Canada from the United States” rose on Friday after the US Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade, according to Google Trends.
Why it matters: Abortion is legal at all stages of pregnancy in Canada.
- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the news of the decision in the United States “appalling”, saying: “No government, politician or man should tell a woman what she can and cannot do with her body.”
- Interest in the demand for relocation to Canada has already grown at the end of last month. The last time demand reached or exceeded this level was around the last presidential election, in the first week of November 2020.
In numbers, demand for “how to move to Canada from the United States” rose 850 percent in the hour since the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling was announced, according to a Google Trends newsletter sent to Simon Rodgers on Friday night.
- “How to become a Canadian citizen” grew by 550% over the same period.
- “Rowe vs. Wade” became the most popular topic on Google yesterday, with DC being the best sub-region for Rowe vs. Wade’s search.
- Massachusetts and Pennsylvania are in second and third place.
