The Victoria Fire Department was called in to respond to a fire in an apartment on Bay Street this morning.
Cassie Holcomb lives on the fourth floor of the 55 Bay Street building and told CHEK News that the fire was on the third floor.
“I live on the fourth floor and our fire alarm went off,” Holcomb said, noting that it happened around 5 a.m. “I grabbed my glasses, my mobile keys and my computer and left. And when I got in the parking lot, people were actually yelling at other people to get out of the building. “
Holcomb noted that the fire alarm had previously been triggered accidentally, so people went out on their balconies to see if they should be evacuated.
She said the fire was on a third-floor balcony, and firefighters and police arrived about five minutes after she left the building.
“It looks like he was mostly on the balcony,” Halcomb said. “The fire department was great. They were there for us for a few minutes and took him out pretty quickly. “
Halcomb says they were allowed back into the building between 6:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.
“There seemed to be relatively little damage. “I definitely smelled smoke in the building,” Halcomb said. “I have a fire door just in front of my apartment, and my neighbor is on the other side of it and said that his apartment is super smoky. Mine wasn’t bad, in fact I’m very happy to have this fire door and firewall.
Halcomb says she is very grateful to the firefighters and police who arrived, as well as to a couple who were delivering newspapers, who called 911 when they saw the fire.
“A couple came to me and they said they were delivering documents, they saw smoke and called the fire department,” Halkumb said. “I thank them very much. And many thanks to Victoria Fire and Victoria Police for being there so quickly and responding so early in the morning. It was great. I am very grateful that I can have an apartment to return to. ”
Victoria police say the cause of the fire is not suspicious and no one was injured.
