A California man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking a police officer during a protest against the recent repeal of an abortion by the US Supreme Court, police said.
Michael Ortiz, 30, and Juliana Bernado, 23, were among those arrested in a clash with police officers in downtown Los Angeles on Friday as people gathered to protest Rowe’s cancellation against Wade, the police chief said. Los Angeles Michelle Moore.
“The vast majority of those involved were peaceful and law-abiding, but a much smaller group of people took to the streets with the intention of creating chaos and destruction,” the LAPD said.

Authorities said as protests continued through the night, members of the crowd began “throwing fireworks and other improvised weapons” at officers.

Ortiz is said to be among those members and is accused of throwing a makeshift flamethrower at an officer who was to be treated for burns. He is accused of attempting to kill a police officer, KTLA reported.

It is alleged that at some point during the night, Bernado tried to take an officer’s baton and was subsequently detained, the New York Post reported. She faces possible charges of resisting arrest.
“I condemn the violence against officers that took place last night and today,” Los Angeles Police Chief Michelle Moore said in a press release.

“Persons involved in such criminal activity do not exercise their rights under the 1st Amendment in protest of the Supreme Court’s decision, but rather act as criminals,” he added. “The department will vigorously pursue these individuals.”

The LAPD said it encouraged its citizens to gather peacefully to protest and welcomed the political demonstrations.
“The Los Angeles Police Department has the honor of facilitating First Amendment rights for all Angeles. Similarly, the department will apply the law when individuals engage in violence. “Those who expressed themselves peacefully today are appreciated and recognized by the Los Angeles Police Department,” LAPD police said.

Authorities in major cities had to respond to similar protests, including riots in New York, Washington, DC, Portland and Phoenix. New York City police told Fox News Digital that at least 20 people were arrested Friday night after protests turned violent.
