Fire crews are still on the scene after a huge fire in an apartment building in Plymouth this morning. The fire department received numerous calls to a burning apartment with possible people who are still at the property in the Stonehouse area of Plymouth shortly after 4 p.m.
The fire was in the basement of a five-story building and spread to the ground floor. Teams from across the city, as well as beyond, rushed to the scene.
The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed, but investigators are on the scene. Caroline Place remains closed between Miller Court and Stonehouse Street.

A spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said: “This morning the fire department took a number of calls to a burning apartment with possible people who are still on the property in the Stonehouse area of Plymouth. The control mobilized two fire extinguishers from Greenbank and one fire extinguisher from Camels Head together with an officer.
“Within three minutes of the arrival of the first teams at the scene, the teams confirmed that a flat well was on fire and they requested a fourth device for additional resources and personnel. This was mobilized by Plymstock.
“Minutes later, the crews confirmed that there was a well-developed basement fire and the crews used four BAs, three hose jets, a safety jet and small tools. Crews also want a fifth device for additional personnel, which was mobilized by Crownhill. At the request, Totnes Command and additional officers were sent.
“There was a fire in the basement of a five-story building that was spreading to a ground-floor apartment. The crews were mobilized by Yelverton and Plimpton, along with the Ivybridge Welfare Department.
The spokesman added: “The teams have carried out a full inspection of all the apartments and confirmed that there is no one in any of the apartments. They confirmed that the fire has already been extinguished and are wearing BA to reduce hot spots. “
