Philadelphia’s Phillies striker and NL’s MVP manager Bryce Harper suffered a fractured left thumb on Saturday night against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park (GameTracker). Harper took Blake Snell’s quick ball at 97 mph in his hand and immediately left the game. The Phillies announced the fracture shortly thereafter and said Harper would undergo additional tests in the coming days. They did not provide a schedule for his recovery.
Here is a video from the wrong terrain. Snell apologized, and although in obvious pain and understandably upset, Harper seemed to tell Snell that he knew he hadn’t hit him on purpose as he left the field.
Harper was limited to DH duty for most of the season due to an elbow injury. However, he had a fantastic season and took the .320 / .385 / .602 line with 21 doubles and 15 home runs in Saturday’s game. He ranks seventh in baseball in terms of extra base (37) and eighth in total number of bases (145). Simply put, Harper is indispensable.
“Things happen for a reason,” Harper told reporters, including MLB.com, after the game. “Everyone is saying that. This reason sucks right now, but at the same time it is what it is. I have to be positive. I have to be positive about the boys here. I know they will choose I’m just very upset about the organization, the boys, the city of Philadelphia, the fans. I like to run there and play every day. I’m definitely upset. “
Harper had one of the best seasons of his career, although he played from mid-April with a torn UCL in his right hand. He hit .318 with 15 home runs, 48 RBI and .984 OPS. It ranks fifth in the NL in terms of average strokes, sixth in percentage on the base (.385) and second in the percentage of drilling (.599).
The Philistines will put Harper on the 10-day list of injured on Sunday. Triple-A Lehigh Valley outfielder Mickey Moniak will take his place on the list. They hope to arrive in time for the series’ finale on Sunday.
“It’s a difficult pill to swallow,” said Phyllis interim manager Rob Thomson. “But they will not cancel any matches. We have to play.”
Thomson said Phyllis would take on the role of Harper DH with Nick Castellanos, Kyle Schwarber and others. But every striker will have to step up.
They know it.
“It’s devastating to say the least,” Castellanos said. “He has a year of All Star, MVP-caliber. Losing it for any period of time is too long. We will all have to step up. I definitely included. In order to bear the burden that we go to lack, it must be done.
“We’re where we are and we’ve won the games we have, and I still think there’s a better version of Rhys [Hoskins]i think there is a better version of JT [Realmuto]. There is a much better version of me. I think it’s only a matter of time before all of these appear. If they show up at the same time, baseball can become real fun, very quickly. “
Phyllis president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski mentioned that the Braves won the World Series last year without Ronald Akunya Jr., who suffered a knee injury at the end of the season on July 10.
They finished the regular season 44-29. The Padres did not have Fernando Tatis Jr. this season. They are 45-29.
Chase Utley broke his right arm on July 26, 2007. He returned on August 27. The Phillips went 15-13 without him.
“I mean, you just have to do it,” Dombrowski said. “You lose good players. Again, I don’t know how long he will be away at this point, but I hope he will be back at some point. We just need to move on from here and do the best job we can. We still have very good strikers in the squad. “
It is unknown at this time what he will do after leaving the post. It’s too early to say how Harper’s injury could change the team’s plans for the August 2 trading deadline.
“It just happened,” Dombrowski said. “We have to see how we play. I still hope we play well. We still have a good club.”
Harper fell to the ground as soon as the ground hit him. It looked bad and it was. Dombrowski and others thought he had hit Harper in the face in April 2021 in St. Louis. Harper somehow moved away from the one with only a bruised forearm from ricochets.

“I’d like him to hit me in the face,” Harper said. “I don’t break bones on my face. I can take 98 on my face, but I can’t take 97 on my thumb.”
Harper finally got up. He shook as he held his thumb. Disappointed, he shouted at Snell. The two have known each other for years. They sent messages to each other during the game. Harper said they were fine.
“Obviously I felt terrible hitting him,” Snell said. “We talked, we did it. It was never anything. It’s just emotional. He plays with a lot of passion and I can understand why he is upset. I’m as upset as he is. “
The recovery time for some broken thumbs appears to be four to six weeks. Reds’ hunter Tyler Stevenson broke his right thumb earlier this month. Giants first baseman Brandon Belt broke his thumb last September. Realmuto broke his right thumb in February 2021.
Everyone received an expected recovery of four to six weeks.
But again, Harper will not understand the severity of his fracture until next week.
“I’ve never broken anything in my life,” he said. “This is new to me. … It’s bad.”

Phyllis, meanwhile, believes Kyle Schwarber or Nick Castellanos will share DH’s commitment with more defensive Matt Wierling, who sees a more stable time to play outfield. Mickey Moniac, ranked No. 1 in the 2016 draft, reached .279 / .326 / .558 in Triple-A and can be seen. Of course, the Phillies could trade depending on the length of Harper’s recovery.
Needless to say, Harper’s loss for any length of time is a devastating blow to a team from Phyllis trying to climb into the post-season mix. They are 15-6 after replacing manager Joe Girardi with coach Rob Thomson earlier this month. Among the teams in the National League, only the Atlanta Braves (18-4) have a better result in the league during this time. Sportsline predicts Phyllis’ chances of qualifying for the playoffs at 17.2% if Harper is eliminated in one month.
Even with the hot series after Girardi, Phyllis came in on Saturday with three games after third and last place for the wild card. The shoots have not been in the post-season since 2011 and have the longest post-season drought in the NL.
