ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels got involved in a lengthy brawl of an entire team in the second inning on Sunday after tensions for two days of domestic games boiled over.
Seattle’s Jesse Winker was hit by the first shot of the second inning by Angels discoverer Andrew Wonz, who also threw the pitch behind the head of the second sailors’ striker Julio Rodriguez in the first inning.
Six players and both managers were sent off after the brawl, which resulted in a delay of approximately 18 minutes.
Expelled for the “sailors” were: Winker, Rodriguez, J. P. Crawford and manager Scott Servais. Expelled for the Angels were Wantz, pitchers Ryan Tepera and Raisel Iglesias and interim manager Phil Nevin.
The first pitch seemed to be a response to Eric Swanson’s fast ball of 95 mph near Mike Trout’s head on Saturday night, which infuriated the three-time MVP in AL.
Winker reacted on the field, angrily shouting and gesturing to the dugout of the Angels, and the parties pounced on each other moments later. The fight lasted about four minutes, and it seems that people from both teams struck several blows. Angels third baseman Anthony Randon, who is absent for the season with an injured right wrist, used his left hand to push Winker in the face during the fight.
When Winker finally left the field, he seemed to make an obscene gesture to the mocking Angels fans behind the Seattle dugout.
