Two downtown wards had the highest crime rates in Ottawa last year, while two rural areas had the lowest crime rates.
The Ottawa Police Service released its annual report for 2021 ahead of a meeting of the Ottawa Police Service Board on Monday, along with a report on crime trends looking at crime in all 23 districts in the city of Ottawa.
In 2021, there were about 36,260 reported crimes in the Canadian Penal Code in Ottawa, which is eight percent more than in 2020. Police reported 7,116 violent crimes and 29,146 nonviolent crimes in Ottawa last year.
The Ottawa crime rate, taking into account the crimes per 100,000 people, is 3,510.7 in 2021, up 6.8 percent from 2020.
Separate statistics show that Somerset had the highest crime rate in Ottawa in 2021 – 15,496.3 crimes per 100,000 population, followed by Rideau Vanier (11,165.9 crimes / 100,000 people) and the Sofia Department (4 413,0,0 crimes / 00 people).
The report on crime trends for 2020-2021 shows that in 2021 there were 6,448 reported crimes in the Somerset area, compared to 5,261 crimes reported in 2020. Police say that in 2021 in Somerset had 842 violent crimes and 5,606 nonviolent crimes.
There were 5,593 reported crimes in Rideau Vanier in 2021, which is less than 5,783 crimes in 2020. There were 1,712 crimes in the Capital division in 2021, compared to 1,541 crimes in 2020.
West Carlton-March had the lowest crime rate in Ottawa last year – 945.9 crimes per 100,000 population, down from 988.3 in 202 last year. There were 250 reported crimes in the ward last year, compared to 259 crimes in 2020
Rideau Gulburn had 1,179 crimes per 100,000 population, followed by Stitsville with 1,538 crimes per 100,000 population.
Somerset has the highest crime rate per 100,000 people in 2021 with a 22.7 percent increase. The crime rate in Barrhaven increased by 20.7% last year.
Ines has the largest reduction in crime in 2021 – 8.8 percent. Jug South has the second largest crime reduction of 6.7 percent. West Carlton-March saw a 4.3 percent drop in crime, Rideau-Vanier witnessed a 3.6 percent drop, while Orleans saw a 3.2 percent drop in crime last year.
