Canadians took to the streets this weekend, including in several cities in Quebec today, to condemn the decision of the United States Supreme Court to repeal a law that provides the constitutional right to abortion for nearly 50 years.

The Quebec Planned Parenthood Federation is inviting people to meet outside court buildings in Montreal, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, Rimouski and Troyes-Riviere, while other protests have taken place across the country since Rowe’s decision to overturn Wade was announced on Friday.

Quebec federation coordinator Jess Lego says the abolition of the right to abortion is worrying and infuriating for women’s rights and safety.

She says that while such rights cannot be threatened in the same way in Canada, as abortion is a legal medical procedure, she fears that the US decision will fuel the rise of life groups and fuel misinformation about the practice.

Lego says the federation is not advocating for abortion for all, but rather for the right to have opportunities and access to safe clinics.

Martha Painter, chair of Halifax-based reproductive justice organization Wellness Within, says the publicity resulting from the decision is an opportunity to communicate with patients about where they live and to push the government for more funding for reproductive and sexual health. .
