A TUI flight from Manchester issued an “alarm” this morning shortly after takeoff. The flight – TOM5GM – has since circled over the northwest for more than two hours until it appears to return to Manchester Airport.
The plane sent code 7700 “Squawk”, signaling an emergency at 13,000 feet shortly after takeoff at 10:30 a.m. The flight was headed for Cape Verde and was already delayed before takeoff.
BOEING 767-300 sent the code 7700 Squawk, which immediately alerted the Air Traffic Control for an aircraft in distress. This may indicate a technical or engineering problem with the aircraft that is currently unknown.

A spokesman for Manchester airport said they were aware of a “flight that has decided to return to Manchester”. TUI was asked for a statement. A flight tracking website appears to show the plane descending to land at Manchester Airport.
This comes after another TUI flight was due to return to Manchester for an emergency landing on Friday (June 24th) evening after passengers smelled smoke. The flight, which was already 15 hours late, was flying over continental Europe when it turned to Manchester due to a “technical malfunction”.
This left many on board “petrified” and the plane was greeted by fire engines after landing.
