A South Carolina man was killed after an 11-foot alligator dragged him into a lake

A South Carolina man was killed Friday after authorities said an 11-foot alligator attacked him and dragged him into a detention pond.

In a Facebook post, the Hori County Police Department said they responded to a water rescue call around 11:45 a.m. Friday near Myrtle Beach Golf & Yacht Club.

They and members of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Division and the SCDNR Law Enforcement Division also responded to help.

When they arrived at the scene, the alligator was found to have caught the unidentified man standing near a detention pond and dragged him.

The man’s body was later removed from the lake and officials determined that the alligator should be euthanized on the spot.

FOX News correspondent Phil Keating reports that there are millions of alligators in the United States, from Texas to Carolina.

Florida has an estimated alligator population of about 1.3 million with an average of seven unprovoked attacks a year that require medical attention, Keating said.

Louisiana has about 2 million alligators.

People living or visiting areas where alligators are known to live should be careful when walking and should keep a close eye on pets and children.
