Ministers can no longer use a “well of good will that has completely dried up” to run the NHS, a British Medical Association leader will say as he urges the government to repeal the “brutal” cuts in health services before the pandemic.
Dr. Chaand Nagpol, in his last speech in the role, will warn that the United Kingdom has 50,000 fewer doctors in England than the average among the members of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which includes France, Germany, Canada and Japan, and said that the government “needs to wake up, open its eyes and realize that we cannot afford to lose a single doctor if patients no longer suffer.”
His comments come when experts warn that the UK is battling a fifth wave of Covid as infections increase, fearing that major summer events could lead to an increase in cases even more.
Coronavirus cases have risen sharply in recent weeks, with the latest figures showing that 1.7 million people tested positive in the United Kingdom, up 23 percent from the previous week.
The increase is due to the latest variants BA.4 and BA.5, sub-variants of Omicron.

ICYMI: The UK is already in the “fifth wave”, as experts warn that summer events will see that infections will increase even more
The United Kingdom is battling a fifth wave of Covid as infections increase and major summer events could lead to an increase in cases even more, experts have warned.
Coronavirus cases have risen sharply in recent weeks, with the latest figures showing that 1.7 million people tested positive in the United Kingdom, up 23 percent from the previous week. The increase is due to the latest variants BA.4 and BA.5, sub-variants of Omicron.
There are fears that the return of mass events for the first time since the pandemic – such as Glastonbury over the weekend, the Notting Hill Carnival and the Edinburgh Festival in August – will lead to a continuation of the Covid spiral.

How likely are you to catch coronavirus again when the incidence in the UK is increasing?
Scientists have warned that a new wave of infections has begun, as two sub-variants of Covid have led to a jump in cases.
More than 1.7 million people are already infected with the virus in the UK, an increase of 23 percent per week, according to the latest figures from the National Statistics Office. This increase is largely due to the omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5, said ONS.

Pakistan is ordering masks for domestic flights as the number of COVIDs increases
Pakistan’s aviation regulator has made masks mandatory for domestic flights due to the gradual increase in the number of COVID-19 cases across the country, the statement said.
The order comes a day after Pakistan’s largest city, Karachi, announced that its COVID-19 positivity rate, or the percentage of positive cases from all tests conducted, had risen to 21 per cent from a national level of 2.8 per cent.
“With immediate effect, wearing a mask will be mandatory on board domestic flights,” the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) said in a statement late Sunday.
Pakistan has had very few cases of COVID in recent months and has lifted almost all safeguards.
But in the last 24 hours, COVID’s national positivity rate has risen to 2.85 percent with 382 positive cases and two deaths, according to data released Monday by the National Health Institute in Islamabad.

Boris Johnson put an end to the UK government’s social restrictions on Plan B to tackle the Omicron coronavirus variant in England on 24 February 2022, apparently drawing a line under the era of blockade once and for all.
How did this affect the transition to NHS Covid? My colleague Joe Somerlad took a look.
