The passer-by heard a low whimper coming from the direction of the manhole cover in the early hours and called an ambulance.

Rescuers rushed to the scene about 200 meters from his home and found Joe at the bottom of the sewer.

A firefighter went into the sewer to get him out.

The child was taken to hospital with hypothermia, but without serious injuries.

His father told reporters that he was “doing well” given the circumstances.

Police shared the news that Joe was found, tweeting: “Eight-year-old Joe is alive!”

Officers are investigating how the child got into the sewer and whether it was closed on purpose.

He could not lift the heavy manhole cover on his own, police spokesman Stefan Klatt said.

“It is possible for him to climb into the tunnel maze at another point in the branched canal system and crawl through the pipes,” he added.

The entire sewer system is now being surveyed with cameras.
