Boris Johnson is ready to give the green light for more defense money after being pressured by ministers to increase the budget to respond to the threat from Russia.
The prime minister is expected to announce additional billions for more equipment as he flies for the NATO summit in Madrid, which begins today.
Johnson is paving the way for rising defense spending by telling Britain yesterday that “the price of freedom is worth paying” and arguing that long-term prosperity is closely linked to resistance to Russian aggression.
Jens Stoltenberg, NATO’s secretary general, said 19 allies had made clear plans to achieve NATO’s goal of spending 2% of GDP on defense by 2024.
