Senator Patrick Leahy needs hip surgery after a fall

It is not clear how long he will be absent from the 50-50 split Senate, but the hall is at rest next week until the week of July 11.

Leahy, 82, was born blind in one eye and had a “lifelong struggle with a reduced perception of depth,” a statement from his office said.

“He has suffered some remarkable annoyances over the years, but he has finally caught up,” his office said.

Lihi is expected to fully recover after the operation and start physiotherapy immediately, his office said.

His office told CNN it was too early to know how long his doctors would suggest he stay away from the Senate. His absence would make it difficult for Democrats to accept something with a simple majority that at least one Republican senator would not vote for.
