The Putney school said staff and students were left “shocked, sad and deeply upset” after a 10-year-old girl died on a trip to a local leisure center on Tuesday afternoon.
Officers were called to the Putney Leisure Center on Dryburgh Road in south-west London at 2.46pm, where it was reported that the girl was under cardiac arrest.
The girl, a student at Hotham Elementary School, was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.
A school spokesman said: “Our entire school community was shocked, saddened and deeply upset by today’s tragic events, involving a student from our school who unfortunately died.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with her family as they come to terms with their loss, and we will do everything we can to support them, as well as our staff and all our students in the difficult days ahead.”
A spokesman for the Putney entertainment center confirmed that the girl fell ill while visiting the center.
“Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.”
A gym user who was at the center at the time of the incident said the facility was closed after the incident with consumers said there was “emergency medical care”.
The woman said: “The staff was running around and there was a look of horror on people’s faces. When I found out what had happened, I was very upset. The staff here are as friendly and would handle the situation as anyone could in the circumstances. ”
The center has swimming pools, a gym and a functional hall and lists a number of children’s activities.
The London ambulance said an ambulance crew, an advanced paramedic, two paramedics in an ambulance and an accident officer were sniffed at the scene.
“We treated a patient at the scene and took him to hospital as a priority,” a spokesman said.
Officers and a London ambulance arrived and provided emergency first aid.
A forensic examination was carried out on the spot and the investigation continues.
