A 63-year-old woman who took a knife with her for protection was spared from prison. Judith Tyrer accompanied a friend to pick up clothes from an address in Burton in the early hours of the morning.
She was carrying a knife in her protection bag as protection, but police arrived and she admitted she had a blade. Tyrer, who has not committed a crime in more than 20 years, has now been sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 12 months, at a justice center in North Staffordshire.
Prosecutor Zane Riaz said police were present at an address in Burton at 1 a.m. on Feb. 9 after receiving a signal that two people had tried to break in with a lever. Mr Riaz said: “Police found two women matching the description. None of them had a lever. However, the defendant was stopped and searched, and she told the officer that she had a knife in her bag. She said she expected problems and that was for protection. She was arrested. “

In a police interview, the defendant said she had a potato peeler knife. She said the other woman had to get to the address to pick up clothes. She went as a backup. She admitted that she had given a different account at the scene and added that she was in defense because of gangs in the area carrying knives.
Judith Tyrer, 63, has publicly admitted to owning a knife.
Tyrer of Finstock Avenue, Burton, pleaded guilty to possession of a knife in public.
Mike Kimberly, mitigating guilt, said the defendant had not offended for more than 20 years. She became addicted to alcohol and felt sorry for a woman who lives outside the shops. Mr Kimberly said: “This man was a drug user and he pressured the accused to demand money. She allowed her friends to come and stay for a few days. The defendant seemed frightened by these people and was happy to get rid of them. She got a call. Can he do one last favor? Can he come and get clothes from the woman’s boyfriend’s address? She put the knife in her bag. He was there for a little protection if they were to be beaten.
“She went with this man. When the police came, she cooperated. She didn’t take out the knife.”
Mr Kimberly said the defendant had had the knife for 20 years and it was her favorite peeling knife and asked that it be returned to the defendant. He added: “She is deeply ashamed of herself. This will not happen again.”
As part of the suspended sentence, Tyrer must meet the 15-day rehabilitation requirement.
She was ordered to pay £ 185 in costs and £ 128 in additional fees.
Magistrates ordered the confiscation and destruction of the knife.
