The cat reunited with its owner after it was found on an offshore oil platform – five years after it disappeared.
The adventure cat was found in a transport container by puzzled workers and flew back to the mainland of Scotland by helicopter on Friday.
His microchip was subsequently tested by Scottish SPCA officials – revealing the true identity of the cat as Dexter.
It also turned out that in recent years he had lived as a tramp around Peterhead Prison in Aberdeenshire.
Dexter had even earned the nickname “one-eyed Joe” from prison officials who fed and took him.
Amy Findley, an animal rescue officer at the SPCA, admitted that “she has no idea how the cat ended up” in the container.
She said: “We are so happy that he was well taken care of for the time he was missing, but we were even happier to be able to reunite him with his original owner, thanks to his current microchip.”
Anyone who finds an injured or distressed animal is called to call the Scottish SPCA’s helpline on 03000 999 999.
