Jefferson, a suspect in the western county murder, was shot dead as lawmakers tried to approach him, authorities said.
The trial began shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday, when Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to a house in Block 1700 on Alliance Road. Sergeant Johnny Money said they found an elderly man dead at the scene.
Shortly after 6 p.m., she said, investigators learned the suspect may be in a nearby apartment. When the deputies arrived, the suspect was on the front porch and shot himself when the deputies approached him.
The wounded suspect was taken by air to UAB hospital with serious injuries.
The suspect is the landlord of the victim, Money said. The motive has not yet been revealed.
