A man died after a shooting involving police at a hotel in downtown Vancouver East Side

Vancouver police said a man died Thursday after a shooting involving police at the Patricia Hotel in downtown Eastside.

Police were called to the Patricia Hotel in East Hastings and Dunley Avenue shortly after 4 p.m. PT for reports of a gun attack, according to a statement.

A man “collided” with the responsible employees at the hotel, the statement said.

Police said “a quarrel ensued and they were shot”, but did not provide further details.

The statement said a man in his forties had died on the spot.

The independent investigation service of the BC is now investigating. The service investigates all incidents involving an officer that result in serious injury or death.

The province bought the Patricia Hotel and two other buildings in Downtown Eastside last April to house people who have experienced homelessness, including those who lived in Strathcona Park.
