A man died after an exchange of gunfire with Vancouver police on Wednesday night.
Police said officers were called to a residential building near Commercial Drive and East 5th Avenue shortly after 8:30 p.m. after reports of an attack.
Police said there was an “interaction” that led to a shooting between the man and police.

Neighbors told Global News they heard gunshots around 9:45 p.m.

“We were told there was a man downstairs with a gun shooting at the police in the last 30 minutes,” a neighbor told Global News.

The man, in his 40s, died in the shooting, police said.
“We are quite scared at the moment,” the neighbor added. “We (were) hiding in the middle of the apartment and heard more gunfire, more police coming with tactical equipment and larger, longer assault rifles. In the end, they escort us. “
The body of the suspect was taken away by the forensic doctor on Thursday morning.

A police officer was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
They have now been discharged from the hospital and are expected to fully recover.
The Independent Investigation Service confirms that they are investigating the case.
