A man was saved from a fire in the apartment in View Towers in critical condition

A man rescued from his balcony after a fire broke out in an apartment building in downtown Victoria Friday is in critical condition, officials said.

Police closed the intersection of Quadra and View, as well as View between Vancouver and Quadra streets, after firefighters were called to the View Towers fire before noon.

Firefighters were spotted rescuing a man from his balcony with a ladder truck. Paramedics transported the man to a hospital, where he is said to be in critical condition, Victoria Fire later confirmed.

Heavy smoke was briefly seen leaving the apartment before the crews put out the flames.

Police in Victoria helped firefighters evacuate the building.

Dan Fire Atkinson, acting head of the Fire Fire Department, said CHEK News was working in the department to find out how many residents would be displaced by the fire.

Tobias Jones, a resident of View Towers, said he was returning home when the fire broke out on the 10th floor.

“The fire was right next to my apartment,” he said. “If I lose my work there, I lose my work. I have collected many native works of art over the last few years. ”

Another resident said they were sleeping in their block on the 18th floor when the fire alarm went off.

“It simply came to our notice then. “I started smelling smoke, I looked through my door, I even saw smoke in the hallway,” he said. “There will be a lot of water damage and a lot of smoke damage right now.”

The Victoria Fire Department confirmed around 12:45 that the fire had been contained.
