A man who raped a woman he met on a dating app “persisted in the delusion that what he did was acceptable.”

A man raped a woman in her home after meeting her on a dating site. Michael Collins was imprisoned for eight years after the attack on his victim, whom he met in “Abundance of Fish”.

The incident happened in 2016. Collins, who is now 28, went to the woman’s house after contacting her online. The Minshull Street Crown court has heard that the victim thinks he is taking her to go to a meeting.

They stayed at the woman’s house. After watching TV, they kissed, which was by mutual consent, the court heard.

Collins then tried to place his hand under the woman’s chest. She said no – and told him she didn’t want to have sex. He continued to touch her, despite her protests. He raped and sexually raped her.

The court heard Collins say, “Damn, it took me an hour to get this out of you.” He told her several times that she had “freaked him out” and that she was “lazy.”

The victim, the court heard, suffered psychologically, left home and is now suffering from anxiety. Defending, Richard Orme told the court that Collins, who hails from Ireland, comes from a family-oriented community. He followed his parents to Manchester to “make a living in the UK”.

Record holder Abigail sentenced Colin to eight years. She said: “It was your intention to have sex, the consent was completely irrelevant.

She said that although Collins “may have matured”, the fact that he “persists in the delusion that what he has done is acceptable” means that he is still a “risk” and must be kept behind bars.

Collins of Craig Road, Gorton was found guilty of two counts of rape; sexual violence; and causes a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. He was ordered to sign the register of sex offenders for life.

Following the incident, DC Martin Bateman of the GMP City of Manchester CID said: “Although he was told no, Collins forced this woman to satisfy his sexual desires. Sex crimes often have a lifelong impact on victims, but hopefully today’s outcome will provide a level of closure.

“I also hope that this case builds public confidence and confidence that, although these cases may take some time, GMP is committed to bringing offenders to justice by launching in-depth investigations that gather all the evidence to ensure the best possible outcome ‘.
