A monkeypox has been found in Norfolk County

The monkeypox virus has found its way to Norfolk County.

The health department said on Friday that a Norfolk resident had tested positive and was currently being isolated at home.

The contacts of the infected resident have been notified, the media from the health unit reported.

“There is no increased risk of monkeypox to the general public resulting from this case,” said incumbent Dr. Matt Strauss in a statement.

“Outside of an emergency, if you have symptoms of monkeypox, it’s important to stay home and call your doctor for a checkup. When you seek medical help, you should wear a high-quality medical mask and cover all lesions and open wounds. “

The monkeypox is spread by direct physical contact, most often by touching a rash on the skin of an infected person, but sometimes by “respiratory secretions” if it is in close proximity for an extended period of time, the health department said.

“Most people infected with monkeypox will have mild symptoms and will recover on their own without treatment,” the statement said.

Symptoms that last between two and four weeks may include fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, low energy, muscle aches, skin rash, or lesions, sometimes starting from the face or genitals and spreading elsewhere.

The health department says symptoms usually begin between six and 13 days after exposure to the virus.

The Halton region registered its first confirmed case of monkeypox earlier this month.

Close contacts of monkeypox patients qualify for the smallpox vaccine, which also provides protection against monkeypox.
