A person set himself on fire in front of the Supreme Court building

A man was transported to hospital after he set himself on fire in front of the Supreme Court building in Washington on Friday night, officials said.

The disturbing incident happened around 6:30 pm in the square in front of the court building, said the public information officer of the Supreme Court Patricia McCabe.

After setting themselves on fire, the person was taken by medical helicopter to a local hospital.

Authorities did not disclose the person’s condition. No other injuries were reported.

The area remained closed for investigation two hours after the incident, but McCabe confirmed that “this is not a public safety issue.”

The motivation of the person is unclear.

The Supreme Court Police, the US Capitol Police and the MPD responded to the scene.

Earlier in the day, four people were shot dead when a gunman suddenly opened fire in a residential area in the northwestern part of the city, forcing residents and schools to lock up and take shelter on the spot. Police are still searching for the suspects.
