The winter storm warning is in effect ahead of the weather system, which is expected to bring heavy snow to parts of western Manitoba by Sunday, Environment Canada said.
The low in Colorado, moving through Dakota in the United States, will spread a band of mixed rainfall through the affected areas on Saturday morning.
Although it may start as rain, wet snow or even freezing rain, these precipitations will turn into heavy snow later on Saturday, the meteorological agency said in a warning.
Heavy snow will continue at night and will decrease during the day on Sunday, and the north wind will blow up to 80 km / h.
The total amount of snowfall will usually be between 20 and 40 centimeters, although over higher terrain the snowfall may exceed 50 centimeters.
The areas affected are:
- Virden-Suris.
- Dauphin-Russell-Roblin-Winnipegosis.
- Minedosa-Riding Mountain National Park.
- Ste. Rose-McCreery-Alonso-Gladstone.
The weather signal called on people in these areas to consider postponing minor trips until conditions improve, and to prepare for rapidly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.
More details on the weather in Manitoba are available on the Environment Canada website.
The Meteorological Agency issues warnings for winter storms – which are not necessarily limited to the winter season – when severe and potentially dangerous conditions are expected, such as heavy snowfall (25 centimeters or more within a 24-hour period).
Warning for snowfall in other regions

People in these regions need to be prepared for power outages as well as rapidly changing and deteriorating travel conditions, warns Environment Canada. Visibility in the area may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.
Snow is expected to fall in several other parts of southern Manitoba – though not so much.
The snow warning warns that these regions are expected to reach between 10 and 20 centimeters when the rain turns to snow on Saturday night.
The areas affected are:
- Arborg-Hekla-Fisher-Gipsomville-Ashern River.
