A Winnipeg teacher is recovering at home after being hit with a hammer by a student at Shaftsbury High School, the school’s Pembina Trails unit said.
A student took a hammer to school, hit the teacher in front of other students, and then left the classroom, according to a statement from the school department of Pembina Trails after Tuesday’s incident.
“The teacher called for help. The student left the classroom and was taken to the office,” the statement said.
“The student’s family has been notified and the student is now at home. The Winnipeg Police Department was also very attentive to offer support if needed. We are currently unable to comment on the next steps WPS may take. “
No information was given on the extent of the teacher’s injuries or where he was hit.
A police spokesman said officers were called around 11:30 a.m. and met with the teacher, who refused medical attention.
The student was taken out of the school, but was not arrested, police said.
The teacher is currently recovering at home, the department said in a statement sent to students and parents.
“We know that transparency is important for our families, and receiving information directly from the school will reassure you and help you with further conversations with your child,” the letter said.
There is no information about the age and gender of the student and the teacher.
A social worker stayed with the class to offer support to those who saw the incident and others in nearby classrooms who heard the commotion, the statement said.
Students in the adjacent classrooms were instructed by their teachers to take appropriate measures to stay safe.
“We want to congratulate the staff and students for staying calm and reacting in ways that allow school staff to manage and resolve this serious incident,” the statement said.
The school department will assess the threat of the incident and the processes that have followed.
We know that witnessing a violent incident can cause trauma and feelings of anxiety, worry, anger, etc. These feelings are normal. Please note that our advisors are available to support students. Please contact us with questions or concerns, “said a statement to the families.
“Finally, we can’t wait for our teacher to return to the classroom.”
