A Texas prisoner escaped arrest after stabbing a bus driver

A Texas prisoner serving a life sentence for murder escaped from custody on Thursday after stabbing a driver of a bus transporting prisoners and then escaping on foot, officials and reports said.

Gonzalo Lopez, 46, somehow slipped out of his shackles and stabbed a correctional worker driving a bus full of prisoners in Leon County, sparking a fight that led to an uncontrolled car crash, KBTX reported.

The driver was cut in the arm with an unknown object, and Lopez managed to escape around 1:20 p.m., although there were reportedly two armed police officers on the bus.

Lopez was on board to undergo a medical examination, according to television.

Numerous agencies were searching for the convicted killer on Thursday night on Highway 7 near Interstate 45 outside Centerville, about two hours north of Houston, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said in a statement.

Lopez’s death sentence has come from Hidalgo County, the department said. He was also charged with attempted murder with death in Web County, according to the department.

It is believed that the fugitive is still wearing his white prison clothes.
