RCMP Nanaimo turned to the public for help in identifying a number of suspects after an employee of a liquor store was sprayed with a bear during the theft of several expensive bottles of alcohol.
According to police, the alleged incident happened around 10:30 pm on Tuesday, March 22 at the Landing liquor store located in Brooks Landing Mall.
The thieves turned to several bottles of Scotch whiskey from the store, and when they collided with staff, one of the suspects pulled out a box of bear spray and dropped it near the clerk before running away with the alcohol.
Two women were also at the store at the time of the theft, and police believe they were used to distract employees while the man who used the bear spray picked up bottles of alcohol.
According to the Nanaimo RCMP, officers were present at the scene after the incident to talk to staff and offer medical assistance, but it was rejected.
Officials told investigators that it was obvious to them that the two women were trying to keep employees busy while the suspect chose the bottles.
Officers also told police that when the man stood up and said he had been called 911, he threw away the bear spray and continued to run in the parking lot on foot. Police searched the area for the suspects, but were unable to locate them.
The man is described as a man in his mid-20s, approximately 6’2 inches tall and had dark jelly hair at the time of the incident.
One woman wore a long gray jacket with a red hood underneath at the time of the incident, while the other woman was slender wearing a black and yellow face mask and a black hood with a triangular logo on the front.
Pictures of all three suspects can be seen in the image above.
Anyone who has information about this incident or who identifies any of the suspects is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP emergency line at 250-754-2345 and cite file № 2022-9736.
