A tractor-trailer overturned on the highway Thursday morning and released just under a dozen runaway cattle.

The accident happened in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where a truck carrying cattle overturned around 4:00 am, according to local newspaper WXII. At the time of the accident, the tug was pulling about 80 cows. Ten of the cows have escaped and four are still free.

“Due to an overturned trailer of an NB 52 tractor on the I-40, it has been stopped. All traffic is being diverted to the eastern I-40,” Winston-Salem police said in a series of statements on social media. “Many agencies are cooperating in efforts to safely remove livestock from the overturned tractor trailer, including the emergency services in Piedmont. The highway is expected to be closed for several more hours,” police added.

Cattle are considered dangerous and authorities warn civilians not to approach the animals. Those who see a stray cow are encouraged to contact the police and not deal with them for their own safety.

“IF YOU SEE CATTLE, PLEASE CALL THE WSPD EMERGENCY EMERGENCY NUMBER,” police said. “Be extremely careful as cows roam and there are reports of accidents.”
