A police officer from the Sofia police received a final written warning after appearing in the Nigerian version of Big Brother without permission.
A hearing on misconduct found that PC Khafilat Kareem had violated the standards of professional conduct with regard to “orders and instructions” and “defamatory conduct”, so a final written warning should be given once a gross infringement has been established.
Karim requested unpaid leave to participate in the show in July 2019, and although permission was granted, she was not given permission to appear on the show.
Shortly after the unpaid leave was granted, Karim left the United Kingdom and took his laptop with him without permission. When she appeared on the show, she handed over her laptop to the show’s organizers.
The panel, chaired by an independently qualified legal chairman, found that Karim had violated standards of professional conduct.

DCS’s Andy Day said: “PC Kareem’s permission to appear in the Nigerian version of Big Brother was denied because it was not considered in the best interests of either it or the Sofia Police Department to participate. Despite this refusal, she still went to the show.
“A detailed investigation was carried out by the Met Professional Standards Directorate, which concluded that Karim must face harsh proceedings for misconduct.
“Being a police officer means that you have to follow the standards of professional conduct. Kareem’s behavior was clearly not far off and she received a final written warning.
The panel found that this violation of professional standards related to the laptop was proven at the level of misconduct.
Africa Magic, the television company behind Big Brother Naija, said it joined the show “so it can do public good.”
Karim’s profile on the TV operator’s website says she will spend the prize money of 30 million naira (£ 68,000) to host a travel show touring Nigeria’s “beauty spots” and ” invests in charitable causes ”. Karim was at Big Brother’s house for 77 days before the vote.
