An OPP officer is facing two assault charges after the man was seriously injured during the arrest

Ontario’s police watchdog says a provincial police officer is facing two assault charges in the arrest of a man who was left with serious injuries.

The Special Investigations Unit says the OPP officer has been charged with assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon in the arrest of a 43-year-old man.

The SIU says Bracebridge OPP officers were called to the Canadian Pacific Railway shed in Georgian Bay around 3:20 a.m. on July 10 after a reported trespassing and breaking and entering.

The agency said officers tracked a suspect to a shopping area, where they shot him with a stun gun and arrested him.

The SIU says the man was sent to a hospital where he was diagnosed with serious injuries.

The OPP officer who has been charged is due to appear in Bracebridge Court on December 20.
