Kelowna RCMP and BCAA remind drivers to slow down and pass.

The BCAA and police were on Highway 97 at Lake Ellison on Friday morning to remind drivers to slow down and move as they approached stopped vehicles showing flashing lights.

“Every year, tugboat operators in British Columbia risk their lives to help drivers when they’re most in need, but many British Colombians are unaware of the laws for the safe approach of a tow truck with its headlights on,” he said. BCAA spokesperson.

The event is an annual reminder and educational tool.

In British Columbia, drivers are required to slow down and drive for all vehicles stopped along the road that have flashing red, blue or yellow lights. This includes maintenance workers, utilities, police, fire, ambulances, towing trucks, commercial vehicle safety personnel, surveyors, animal control workers, garbage collectors and other roadside workers.

While many BC drivers are unfamiliar with the law, drivers must slow down and change lanes for all vehicles stopped along the road that have flashing red, blue or yellow lights.

The RCMP issued warning letters informing drivers of the rules of the road and reminding them to drive safely.

Failure to reduce speed and move puts people on the side of the road and the drivers themselves at risk.

“So we’re here today to share this and hope that people will start to slow down,” said Chris Dobson, a BCAA spokesman.
