Ketanji Brown Jackson confirmed as first black woman Supreme Court judge
President Joe Biden’s first Supreme Court candidate, Ketanji Brown Jackson, was confirmed by a Senate vote. After receiving the support of three Republican senators – Susan Collins, Lisa Markowski and Mitt Romney – she also received the support of all 50 Democrats, becoming the first black woman in court.
The vote comes after a seven-week nomination process in which she was heavily criticized by Republicans, who focused on her alleged attempt to condescend to child sex offenders. This criticism, in turn, was widely dismissed as distorting her past decisions.
Earlier, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she had tested positive for Covid-19, with President Biden, Chuck Schumer and other senior figures just signing a bill.
Ms. Pelosi’s diagnosis means that three of the top 10 people in the presidential line are now known to be infected with the virus. The speaker’s team says she is currently asymptomatic.
Meanwhile, at a White House press briefing Thursday, Jen Psaki rejected Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s plan to transport migrants from the southern border to Washington as a “publicity stunt.”

Jackson will join a more diverse and conservative Supreme Court
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will join the Supreme Court, which is increasingly diverse and conservative than it has been since the 1930s.
After being elected by 53-47 votes in the Senate, she will join the court in the next few months until Judge Stephen Brier retires.
When Jackson takes office for the first time in October, she will be one of four women and two black judges – both first in the High Court.
And the nine-member court will generally be younger than it was nearly 30 years ago when Breyer, now 83, joined him.

Delays are expected in the passage of $ 10 billion for Covid aid in the Senate – report
The bill to inject another $ 10 billion into Covid programs has been postponed until after Easter, when senators return from their two-week spring break, Politico reported, citing a number of senators.
“Republicans are playing politics with the health of the American people,” said Sen. Elizabeth Warren. “Blocking Covid’s protection money is a time bomb for public health. So the Democrats will come back and try to get the money we need, but this is not a good day for the health of the world.
This comes after Senate Republicans are taking steps to block the progress of legislation, as they are not guaranteed a vote on amendments to restore Title 42, Mr Trump’s policy of allowing migrants to be expelled to the border during a pandemic.

Chinese scientist sentenced to more than 2 years in prison for “espionage”
The Ministry of Justice has sentenced a Chinese citizen to more than two years in prison for “conspiracy to carry out economic espionage.”
Xiang Haitao, 44, who lived in Chesterfield, Missouri, pleaded guilty in January 2022.
According to court documents, Xiang has conspired to steal a trade secret from The Climate Corporation, an internationally based company that does business in St. Louis, Missouri, for the benefit of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).
“Xiang has conspired to steal an important trade secret in order to gain an unfair advantage for himself and the PRC,” said Assistant Prosecutor General Matthew Olsen of the Ministry of Justice’s National Security Department.
“Victim companies have invested significant time and resources to develop this intellectual property. Economic espionage is a serious crime that could jeopardize the competitive advantage of American companies, and the Department of Homeland Security is committed to holding accountable anyone who steals trade secrets for the benefit of a foreign government.

The White House rejects Covid’s risk for Biden after Pelosi’s meeting
The White House has dismissed fears that Joe Biden is at risk of contracting Covid after meeting with spokeswoman Nancy Pelosi, who tested positive earlier in the day on Thursday.
“The way close contact is determined is not arbitrary, it is not something made up of the White House, these are the guidelines of the CDC and how they define it is to be within six feet for a total of 15 minutes in 24 hours. . “White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said.
“They were not. All their interactions were publicly available, I think you have seen them and that is how this assessment is made,” added Ms. Psaki.
The two were at the White House, sometimes in close proximity, before Ms. Pelosi tested positive during an Affordable Care Act event attended by former President Barack Obama.

The mandate of the federal employee of Biden for a vaccine against Covid has been confirmed by the American court
The U.S. Court of Appeals on Thursday reinstated President Joe Biden’s executive order requiring federal civilians to be vaccinated against coronavirus.
In what is considered a rare victory for the administration, the 5th District Court of Appeal in New Orleans overturned a lower court case, challenging the mandate.
The Court of Appeals has 17 active Republican-dominated judges, including six appointed by Trump.
That was after US District Judge Jeffrey Brown, who was appointed to the South Texas District Court by Donald Trump, issued a national ban on the mandate in January with 2-1 votes.
“The order is seriously damaging the public interest by hampering efforts to reduce Covid-19 disruptions in federal jobs,” government lawyers said in court documents.

Psaki: Governor Abbot has no authority to plan an “advertising cascade” to transport migrants from Texas to the District of Columbia
A White House spokesman has accused Texas Gov. Greg Abbott of promising an illegal “advertising stunt” on Thursday after the Republican governor vowed to put undocumented migrants on charter buses to Washington.
Ms. Psaki was asked about the governor’s announcement at her daily briefing by Fox News correspondent Peter Ducy. In response, she said no Texas official, including the governor, has the legal authority to forcibly relocate people from their state, enforce federal immigration law, or even take any official action outside the state.
