BlackburnNews.com – Gas Torches in Whitley

By Tamara Thornton, April 23, 2022, 9:29 p.m.

Chatham-Kent’s director of public affairs, Ryan Brown, announced that flammable gas was released at the Wheatley site on Friday.

The initial torch was followed by a second event later in the evening, and the municipality confirmed that the systems, procedures and ventilation pipe were working according to design and there was no danger to public safety.

Chatham-Kent fire and emergency services were also on site, monitoring the air around the perimeter of the evacuation area to ensure safety.

The municipality said that after the second incident, the flare pipe was lit to control the gas and the place was set up for night monitoring. Gas levels dropped and the train was shut down at 9 a.m. Saturday.

“We are pleased that the on-site mitigation equipment / procedures are working exactly as planned and we are confident that the current evacuation area remains secure,” Brown said in a statement.

Whitley’s evacuation zone was just reduced a little less than two weeks ago.
