TORONTO – Charlie Montoyo praised Alex Cora after the Boston Red Sox manager returned a lost PitchCom speaker during Thursday’s 1-0 victory at the Toronto Blue Jays instead of keeping the device to hear incoming tones.
The incident happened between the eighth and ninth innings, after the cat Alejandro Kirk hung up near the visitors’ site. That’s where Cora picked him up and took him to the Blue Jace dugout.
“It was quite elegant to bring it to me,” Montoyo said. “They could easily keep it and hear every blow that (closer to Jordan) Romano would throw. It was great that he did. “
Cora’s actions are in stark contrast to those of Tampa Bay Flight outfielder Kevin Kirmayer, who was scored at home in September by Kirk, whose card was removed from his wrist.
As he rose from the ground, Kirmeyer found the map, picked it up secretly, and took it to the dugout, where he handed it to a coach.
Rays manager Kevin Cash and GM Erik Neander eventually apologized, but that didn’t ease the bad feelings as Ryan Borucki hit Kiermaier off the field later in the series.
Cora has her own story, of course, since in Major 2020 Major League Baseball fired him for a year for his role in the Houston Astros sign theft scheme.
