Boris Johnson will order his deputies tomorrow to block an investigation into allegations that he misled parliament over parties violating the Downing Street blockade.
The prime minister issued a “sincere apology” yesterday after receiving notice of a fixed sanction for attending a cabinet rally to celebrate his 56th birthday.
However, Johnson insisted he had not misled municipalities when he said last December that Covid’s rules were being followed at all times on Downing Street. “It never occurred to me, then or after, that a cabinet meeting just before a vital meeting on Covid’s strategy could be a violation of the rules,” he said.
